Promoting Effective Teaching Practice in Teaching and Engaging Students
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DESCRIPTION A few years ago, the norm for teacher evaluation was to assign “satisfactory” ratings to nearly all teachers evaluated while providing virtually no useful information to improve practice (Weisburg, D. et al.). Now we can find research for effective teaching that really has an impact on student learning. The goal of this professional development is to use the Danielson Framework (2013) as a backdrop to begin an ongoing professional conversation in the district that focuses on building effective teaching. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVES The purpose of the Promoting Effective Teaching Practice: The Danielson Framework Professional Development is to develop awareness of the different levels of teaching performance and how to use the rubrics to analyze teaching practice. Special emphasis is placed on the component 3c: Engaging Students in Learning. Looking at the relationships between domains and the common themes of the Framework helps attendees develop a common language for talking about teaching and best practices. Discussions about how the individual school might adapt the framework to support progress towards school improvement goals will be discussed. Using the Framework to observe recorded lessons with and without the commentary of Danielson trained coaches will be how the participants’ new knowledge will be immediately applied.
