Biographical Sketch:
Son of William H. and Abigail (Lane) Barton. When 2 years old, moved with his parents to Tonawanda, Erie Co., NY where he stayed until 1852. That fall, he moved to St. Louis, MO and worked on railroad construction in that area until the spring of 1858 when he went to Northport, Leelanaw Co. MI. There he engaged in the wooding of lake steamers and selling goods until spring of 1863 when he moved to Leland, MI and engaged in the drug business and in cultivating cranberries. He was supervisor of Leland [twice], justice of the peace [8 years] and postmaster [5 years].
