Biographical Sketch:
Son of Hiram Bostwick and Elizabeth (Chamberlain) Chapman. His family moved to Reading, MI in 1847. He left college in early 1864 to join Co. L, 11th Michigan Cavalry as a private. He was promoted to Quartermaster Sargeant before mustering out. He returned to school and taught, briefly. From 1867-79, he was engaged in mercantile efforts selling hardware and agricultural implements and banking. He also manufactured buffalo robes, coats and mittens and dealt in real estate, lumber, etc. He served as trustee and director of the union school, township superintendent of schools, school inspector and justice of the peace. He was living in Los Angeles, CA in 1910 and 1920.
