Biographical Sketch:
Son of Charles H. from Steuben County, NY and Catherine Van Zile, sister of Judge Philip T. Van Zile of Detroit. Admitted to the bar at age 21. He removed to Hastings and formed a law partnership with Clement Smith in 1880. The partnership was terminated in 1893 when Mr. Smith was appointed to judgeship. Mr. Colgrove then became senior in the firm of Colgrove & Potter. He was elected prosecuting attorney of Barry County in 1882 and reelected twice over. He was a member of Michigan Club and was the president of the State League of Republican Clubs. He was president of the Hastings Iron Co., vice president of the Hastings Table Co., and a director in the Hastings Wool Boot Co. and the Hastings City Bank. Member of the Knights Templar; Masons; Knight of Pythias and was Chancellor Commander of the lodge in 1883. In 1896 at the session of the Supreme Grand Lodged held at Cleveland in August, he was elected Supreme Chancellor of the Supreme Lodge of the Knights of Pythias of the world.
