Biographical Sketch:
Den Herder came to the US with his parents, Christian and Cornelia (De Jonge), in the spring of 1847. Arriving at Black Lake, in Ottawa County, the family settled in Zeeland. At 19, Den Herder began teaching school in Vriesland, MI and continued in that occupation for 10 years. He then entered the mercantile business and for a time operated a gristmill. In 1878, he started a private bank in Zeeland. At 22 and for 15 years thereafter, he was elected township clerk, he served as supervisor for 4 terms, and Justice of the Peace for 1 term. He was a Presidential Elector on 1876, casting his vote for Rutherford B. Hayes. He was elected to represent as Senator the 21st District, comprised of the counties of Muskegon and Ottawa in 1889-1890. He was a Republican.
