Son of Theodore and Franziska (Grobbel) Grosfield. He was first a clerk in a general store. He left Germany secretively to evade mandatory conscription and arrived in Hull, England on a cattle boat. A steamship brought him to New York July 13, 1963. He worked for a munitions plant in Cold Springs, NY for a year before moving to Collinsville, CT and learned grinding and polishing edged tools. In 1866 he traveled in search of work and settled in Detroit that July as a store clerk. A few months later he and his father bought a grocery business. In 1882 the grocery store became a hardware store until 1887. In 1887 Griswold turned to real estate and insurance for his livelihood. From 1892-1910 he was senior member of Grosfield & Scanlon. In 1910, he dissolved the partnership and formed his own company. In 1874, he was on the common council; alderman if the 12th district 1 term; elected to the board of estimates in 1886 and he served 4 years on the board of education.
