Moved with his parents, Elliott T. and Sarah (Smith) Driggs, to Tarrytown, NY, 1825; moved to New York City, 1827; apprentice, journeyman, and master mechanic in the trade of sash, door, & blind manufacturing 1829-1856. He was superintendent of the New York penitentiary and public institutions on Blackwells Island in 1844. President of the common council of East Saginaw, MI,in 1858. Appointed Register of the US Land Office for the Saginaw District, 1861. Made colonel during the Civil War; organized the 29th Michigan Infantry July 29, 1864. Moved to MI in 1856; engaged in the real-estate business & salt manufacturing. Injured by a fall on the ice in the winter of 1875-1876, and died in East Saginaw, MI.
Notable Facts:
Elected as a Republican to the 38th-40th Congresses (3/4/1863-3/3/1869); one of the committee appointed to accompany the body of Pres. Lincoln to Springfield, IL, for interment
