Biographical Sketch:
His family moved to Rochester, NY when he was 5 years old. He went into business for himself in 1821. From 1841-49 he was employed as a steward on various great lake passenger steamers. He moved to Detroit in 1849, becoming a brewer and malster [Duncan's brewery]. He served as alderman from 1854-58; mayor of Detroit, 1862-62; and the Board of Estimates in 1873. He retired from business about 1865.

Notable Facts:
First president of the Common Council of Detroit.
