Biographical Sketch:
Son of Josiah and Abigail (Ward) Childs. He began teaching at 16 as he prepared for college at Henniker Academy and Kimball Union Academy, Meridian, NH. He paid his way as a penmanship instructor. He moved to a farm near Augusta, Washtenaw County, MI in 1848. That year, he was elected school inspector. He was subseqently made township superintendent of schools. He served schools in this manner for over 25 years. In 1850 he was elected to the Washtenaw County Board of Supervisors, keeping that position 7 years. He was township supervisor several times and justice of the peace (1858). For 12 years he was president of the Farmers' and Mechanics' Trade Association of Ypsilanti, MI and for 3 years president of the Eastern Michigan Agricultural Society.. He was a member of the Michigan State Board of Agriculture from 1869-82 and on the board for the Michigan Agricultural College Member of the Grange. Ardent supporter of the temperance movement, president of the Legislative Temperance Society.
