Biographical Sketch:
Son of James Winslow and Permelia (McLaughlin) Cochrane. He taught school to pay for his studies. Admitted to the bar in Buffalo, NY, 1862 and started practicing in Warsaw, NY. He moved to Freeland, Saginaw County, MI and followed lumbering until he moved to Midland, MI in 1864 and practiced law until 1871 when he went into lumbering and a land business.
He had a farm about a mile from Midland for several years until he moved into town in 1881. He served in several local offices, such as, supervisor and justice of the peace. Member of the Masons, the Odd Fellows and the R.A.

Manual 1879 gives birth date as 6/1/1840; SeeKMI death certificate says 1/6/1838.
Committees: Public Lands (chair); State Prison; Insurance; and Town and Counties; special committee for revision of tax laws.
In 1870, he built the first mill on the Flint & Pere Marquette Railroad, west of Midland, in parntership with John Haines.
