Biographical Sketch:
Of English descent. Son of Richard R. and Caroline (Thomas) Oates Emigrated about 1891. He moved to Houghton Co., MI with his parents at age 14. After receiving his law degree, he practiced law in Calumet, MI. He was attorney for Laurium for 6 terms; elected Houghton Co. Circuit Court Commissioner twice. Director of the First National Bank of Laurium and of the Laurium Park Association. He is secretary and counsel for the Wolverine & Arizona Mining Company, which has mining properties in Bisbee, Arizona, and headquarters in Calumet. Member of the Odd Fellows; the Elks; the Sons of St. George; and the Kappa Sigma fraternity. In 1920, he was living in Detroit. He later moved to Chicago and then to Palm Beach, FL.
