He was the son of Elisha Lawrence and Patience Clark. He came to Coldwater, Branch County, MI in 1836, removed to Iowa on 1856, and resided in Wilton, Musctine County, in 1887. In Iowa he was Justice twelve years, Mayor two yeard, and held other positions. He was for fifteen years chairman of the Board of School Inspectors in Girard, MI.
