Son of James and Lucy (Bush) Shepard. Moved to Boston soon after birth. During the Civil War he served in the medical department of the US Navy. He moved to Cassopolis, MI in Septembe, 1868. He published the 'Vigilant' there. he was a dentist at the time of his marriage in 1870. In 1910, he was consul for the US in Hamilton, Canada
