Moved with his father's family from Maine to Columbus OH in 1828 & came to Detroit in 1836. Worked in the grocery business there until 1843, then for 13 years engaged in lumbering at Algonac in St. Clair Co., then returned to Detroit where he served as Alderman for the First Ward.
