When Henry was two his father died leaving Henry to fend for himself. His father had been a deputy sheriff in the early days and resided in the old jail and courthouse as turnkey when they were burned. After these burned, Henry lived in Grand Rapids until 1864 when he moved to Cedar Springs where he helds several twonship and village offices.
