Of English descent. Eldest child of Brackley and Lydia (Pool) Shaw. In 1825 his family moved to Ira, Cayuga Co., NY. The family moved to a farm in Dover Twp, near Adrian, MI, 1835. Worked his own farm near Rome twp at 21. Moved to a farm near Toledo, OH, 1842, later moving back to Lenawee Co. Member of the county agricultural society
