Biographical Sketch:
Son of a Dr. Orlando and Amelia H. Moffatt. Moved to Colon, MI with his family in 1858. Taught for 2 yrs. During his last year of law school he worked for Thomas M. Cooley, dean of the school & a Supreme Ct. Justice. Practiced law briefly in Grand Rapids. Prosecuting attorney for Grand Traverse & Leelanaw Counties for 10 yrs. Member of the constitutional comm., 1873. Moved to Lyons in the spring of 1864 & to Northport, 1866 as deputy collector of customs. Register of the U.S. Land Office at Traverse City 1874-1878.

Notable Facts:
served as speaker in state House, 1881-82. Served in both state houses. Elected to the 49th-50th Congresses serving from 1885, until his death on 12/22/1887. Father of state Sen. Orlando C. Moffat. Sprague gives death year as 1886.
