8th of 9 sons of Asahel & Lydia (Webster) Upson. Taught in Farmington, CT, 1840-42; moved to Constantine, St. Joseph Co., MI, 1845; taught in 1846-1847; deputy co. clerk of St. Joseph Co. 1847; admitted to the bar, 1847; practiced law in Kalamazoo; co. clerk in 1848 & 1849; pros. attorney 1852-54; moved to Coldwater, MI 1856. Member of the State bd. of railroad commissioners, 1857; attorney gen'l of Michigan,1861-62;15th circuit ct judge 1869-73; member of the commission to revise the State constitution, 1873; mayor of Coldwater, 1877.
