Notable Facts:
His family moved to Berrien Co. MI in 1829. Raised on a farm, worked summers and went to school in the winter. Served a year's apprenticeship at the carpenter/joiner trade and worked there for ten years. Returned to Berrien Co. in 1861 and purchased a 120 acres of land including a steam saw-mill after the Missouri saw-mill in which he had an interest was burned down when war broke out and his debtors joined the rebel army, leaving him almost ruined. financially. His frugal, industrious wife helped him pay all claims. Served as President of the Berrien Co. Pioneer Agricultural Societies, and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the State Grange.
