Biographical Sketch:
Of Scottish ancestry. Son of Mary (Scott) Duncan. He learned the printer's trade and went west in 1856 and 1858 and started the Iowa City Republican. In 1862 he was appointed a commissioner of swamp land claims by the governor of Iowa. He left that work to serve in the Civil War. Adjutant & Major of 40th Iowa Infantry. After the war he moved to Michigan. He bought the Niles Inquirer and the Berrien County Freeman in 1866, and consolidated the papers to form the Niles Republican. He edited this paper until August 1899 when he retired from active life. He served as alderman and involved in Republican party committee work. He was member of the Royal Arcnum, the Masons, Knights of Pythias and the Maccabees. he was honorary member of the Modern Woodmen of American and was a commander in the GAR.
