Biographical Sketch:
At about 16, he lived in Ithaca, NY and worked on the construction of canals in New York. He later moved to Lima, NY. He moved to Detroit as apprentice at his brother's business, Atkinson & Godfrey (painters). Upon the completion of the apprenticeship he traveled, working as a painter in many cities. he moved back to Michigan and openned his own business, Dean & Godfrey, in Ann Arbor in 1847. The business moved to Detroit in 1854. Godfrey sold his interest in the business in 1866. Member of the Board of Fire Commissioners; served one term as alderman. Member of the Fire Dept, Mechanics Society and the Masons.
