He settled in Genesee County, NY, and came to Nottawa Prairie, MI, in 1825 . Before coming to Michigan, he was a contractor on the Erie Canal. He moved to Three Rivers in 1830. He served as township assessor, 1831, county coroner, 1833-7. He was Register of the U. S. Land Office at Ionia under the administration of Van Buren and also of Pierce
