Biographical Sketch:
Orphaned when young. Emigrated to America at 14. He purchased an interest in a gas plant in Flushing, Long Island, NY, and was involved in the supply of gas in many Eastern cities. Moved to Ann Arbor in about 1855. He erected the first 4 gas works in Ann Arbor. In 1870, he went to Bay City and became involved in manufacturing of railroad machinery, though Ann Arbor remained his home. He built the first street railway in Bay City. He founded the First National Bank in Ann Arbor.

Notable Facts:
Resigned from the legislature after 2 months service. Headstone gives birth year as 1829.
