Biographical Sketch:
Of German ancestry. Son of John David. and Salome (Hersch) Heckert. Enlisted in the 16th Ohio Vol., 4/20/1861. Rose to the rank of 1st Lt. Captured at the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou and imprisoned in Libby prison for 5 months. Began practicing law in South Haven, MI, May, 1869; elected Circuit Ct Commissioner and Prosecuting Attorney; served as probate judge for 8 years. Member of the Masons and the Shriners.
