Biographical Sketch:
Of Irish parentage. Son of Jeremiah and Margaret Mary (Sullivan) Holland.The eldest of 6 children and at the age of 12, because it became necessary for him to help support the family, he went to work as "head tender" in the stamp mill of the Old Ridge copper mine. Later he started in the general blacksmithing business at Bessemer and continued in that occupation for 28 years. After engaging in the grocery and real estate business for several years he was appointed superintendent of the city water department. He served as postmaster, a township supervisor for 1 term and appointed undersheriff in 1906.. In 1906, he was elected mayor of Bessemer by the largest majority ever given a mayor of that city up to that time. He was twice re-elected to that office.

Elected to the legislature in 1911-1912, as a Democrat and re-elected in 1918, 1920, 1922, 1924, as a Republican. He was re-elected November 2, 1926, without opposition.
