Biographical Sketch:
Of Irish ancestry. Son of Leonard and Betsy (Ryon) Ferris. He went to Mishawaka, IN in 1843 to work in a mill-yard; in 1844, he worked in Cass Co., MI. After returning to Indiana briefly, he moved to Van Buren Co., MI in 1850. He moved from Van Buren County to Cheshire in Allegan, Co. in 1854. He built a sawmill on Swan Creek, operating it until it was destroyed by fire in 1860. 3 years later he built another not far from the site of the first. He was school inspector for several years; Cheshire township clerk, 1855 and constable in 1866. After 1876, he consentrated on farming.
