Eldest son of Richard and Betsey Hill; of English and Scottish descent; natives of NH, moved to VT. Samuel moved to Albion, NY in 1839, then WI.
Notable Facts:
Assisted in locating the boundary between WI & MI; worked on the first US Lake Survey. 1845 appointed by Douglas Houghton to work on the geological & linear survey of the Upper Peninsula and completed Houghton's contracts when Houghton died. Instrumental in the creation of the canal between Portage Lake & Portage Entry for shipping ore from the Quincy Mine in Hancock, MI.
