Of English and Irish ancestry. Son of Alfred and Daisy (McRell or McNell). He began practicing law in 1908 and served as assistant prosecuting attorney of Wayne County in 1920 & 1921. He later worked in the personnel department of Ford Motor Co. while continuing to practice law. Strongly backed child labor law reform.
