Biographical Sketch:
He lived on a farm until about the age of 15 when he went to Detroit and shipped for the ocean under the noted Captain Blake, on the steamer Illinois. The next year he apprenticed himself to learn the carpenter and joiners' trade, at which he worked for 4 years under master builders, mostly at Detroit; he attended school 4 months in the year. He then taught school one winter. In 1848 he married, and lived in Detroit several years, working as a builder and contractor. In 1850 he was elected assessor of the first district, comprising the first, second and eighth wards, and was appointed fire warden in 1851. Also in 1851, he purchased a farm and saw mill in Birmingham, and moved his family there in 1854. He was supervisor of Bloomfield township for 2 years. He was special agent of the provost marshal of the Fifth District in 1863 and afterwards became deputy. He has carried on a mercantile business in Birmingham for over 15 years and also dealt in real estate. He was a lumberman in 1861.
