Biographical Sketch:
Son of Thomas, jr and Ann Probert. He emigrated in 1850 and settled in Jefferson Co., NY, and worked on a farm. In 1852, he began a seafaring life on the chain of lakes and on the ocean between Europe and America, and also followed a coasting trade. He moved to Sullivan, Jefferson Co., WI in 1856, still sailing. He enlisted in the 1st Wisconsin Volunteers in April 1862, participating in engagements at Falling Waters, Martinsburg and Harper's Ferry. In 1861, he moved to Pleasanton, Manistee Co., MI as the 4th settler in the township. He served as supervisor [2 terms], highway commissioner, justice of the peace and held other township offices.
