Biographical Sketch:
Of English/Scottish descent. Youngest child of John Tanner & Susan (Westcott) Bentley. In 1843, his family moved to Byron, Genesee Co., NY. In about 1853, he began teaching winters and farming in the summer. In 1863, bought a farm in Leonidas, St. Joseph Co., MI. He was engaged as principal of Mendon Union School in St. Joseph Co. in 1869, for 11 years. He returned to farming and was elected township supervisor and served 2 years on the county board of examiners. First a Republican then a member of Greenback and Fusion parties. In 1885 he mover to Mendon twp. and was elected supervisor there in 1886 and again in 1887 on the Fusion ticket.
