Biographical Sketch:
Emigrated to NY at age 3 with his parents, Nicholas and Caroline Bettinger. Learn to be a cigarmaker at 14. Enlisted as a pvt. in the 5th NY National Guards, 1863. Recalled from the field to deal with the draft riots in NY. On duty there until 22 July, 1863. Re-enlisted in 1864 in the 3rd NY Cavalry; mustered out at Richmond, January, 1867. Moved west (from NY) in 1873, finally settling in Detroit. He was deputy collector of the Internal Revenue from 1898-12.
Notable Facts:
Received heavy support from the workingmen of Detroit.
Died of apoplexy.
