Biographical Sketch:
8th child of Joseph & Margaret (Haynes) Canby of Virginia. Ancestors came to America with William Penn. His family ceased farming and moved to the county seat when he was about 21. He took charge of the railroad freight and ticket office there for 3 years. He engaged in the milling business until the civil war. Enlisted 4/1861 served as a captain in F Co., 23rd Ohio Regiment. After leaving the army in 1864, he followed varied occupations in Memphis, TN and Goshen, IN until 1872, when ill health caused him to retire. In 1874, he was advised to moved for medical reasons and he chose Michigan, when, in 1875 he moved to Freindship twp, Emmet Co., MI. He had a homestead there for 3 years. Served as twp supervisor 3 times and county treasurer twice.
