Worked in sawmills & lumber camps until 1864. Enlisted in Co. K, 20th Maine Infantry, serving from 8/18/1864-6/9/1865. Returned home to Maine, working as a lumberman even after moving to Michigan, 1867. After working in several positions for a few years, a bank failure took his savings. Accumulated enough cash to buy his own business in Au Sable. Bought the Au Sable & Oscoda News, operating it for 1 yr.
