Biographical Sketch:
Son of Miles & Julia F. (Rich) Hine. Enlisted at age 18, in the 144th NY Vol. Inf. serving as Corresponding Clerk for the Southern Dept. in hilton Head, SC, until 6/1865. Moved to Lowell, MI, 1867. Acted as a druggist until 1870 when he bought 1/2 interest in the Lowell Journal; became sole owner, 1873. Recording secretary of the Senate 1873-75; Postmaster 1875-79+ . He was president of the Lowell board of education for 5 years; postmaster for 7 years. In addition, he was vice president of the Lowell Furniture Co. and director of the Lowell National Bank. Contributed to national publications. Moved to Detroit after serving in the Senate. He was one of the editors of the Detroit Tribune, 1887. The Tribune was sold in 1890 and Mr. Hine was appointed US Consul at Amherstburg, ON until the end of Pres. Cleveland's administration. Hine then became editorial writer for the Detroit Journal. When he left the Journal, he purchased the Tecumseh News and edited it for 3 years.
