Biographical Sketch:
Of Irish/Welsh/Scottish ancestry. Son of Gilbert and Hannah (Rowley) Sherman. His family moved to Noble County, IN when he was 8; they arrived in Coldwater, MI in 1871. He was apprenticed to a carpenter at 17. When first in Coldwater, he was in the grocery business for a year and a half, then moved on to work at a planing mill for 8 years and 4 years in the lumber business. He always returned to carpentry. He served as alderman and mayor [1896-98, 1909-11] of Coldwater. Member of the Masons, I.O.O.F. [Odd Fellows], Ancient Order of United Workmen and BPOE [Elks].
