Biographical Sketch:
Of German descent. Son of John H. and Jane Smith. He moved to Gratiot County, MI around 1862. Admitted to the bar 1889; held the office of prosecuting attorney in 1897 and 1898. He held the office of Wheeler Twp supervisor for 11 years; was justice of the peace 22 years; and was city attorney of St. Louis 2 years. He was also alderman for several terms. Appointed postmaster of Wheeler in 1885. Member of the Gratiot Co. Bar Association and the Grange.
