Biographical Sketch:
He was bound out to the blacksmith's trade in New York City. After serving out his time, he moved to Hudson, NY, and formed a partnership in the business of Blacksmithing and Ship-Building. In 1838, he moved to Groveland, Oakland Co., MI. He became a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and travelled in the Fenton Circuit of Michigan. "In 1854, he moved to near Fairfax, Court House, VT., where he was residing when the war of rebellion broke out. He was an uncompromising Union man, and in 1862 was arrested by Gen'l Fitzhugh Lee, was taken to Manassas Junction; kept for 2-3 weeks and subjected to hardships and exposures in inclement weather. Was then taken to Libby prison, Richmond, VA, where he was promised his liberty, if he would
take the oath of allegiance to the Southern Confederacy, which he refused
to do and died in said prison."
