Biographical Sketch:
Son of Solomon & Elizabeth (Stevens) Sutherland. Came to Michigan, 6/1836. Returned to New York for a time. Admitted to the bar, 1848 & commenced practice in Saginaw, MI; prosecuting attorney of Saginaw Co., MI, 1848-49; judge of the 10th circuit ct. of Michigan 1863-71. Moved to Salt Lake City, 1873; member of the faculty of what is now the University of Utah, 1889; president of the Territorial Bar Assoc., 1894 & 1895; moved to Calififornia, 1897.

Notable Facts:
Delegate to the State constitutional conventions in 1850 & 1867. Elected to the 42nd Congress 3/4/1871-3/3/1873
