Biographical Sketch:
Son of William and Jane (Pridgeon) Stockdale. The family emigrated from England to America in 1854, settling on a farm in Branch County, MI. Began working as a blacksmith's apprentice at 12; opened his own blacksmith shop in 1858, in Wayland, MI, following his family to America at that time. In 1865, he purchased a farm and switched to farming. While farming he began the study of law, was admitted to the bar and began practice in 1884. He served as justice of the peace for 24 years, supervisor for 10 years, president of Wayland village for 9 years, president of Allegan village 1 year, judge of probate of Allegan County 12 years. He continued his activities in agriculture and as a senior member of the firm of David Stockdale & Son, Attorneys.
