Biographical Sketch:
Son of John E. and Celestia A. (Nuttall) Spencer. His boyhood was spent in Springfield and Cleveland, OH. At 14, his family moved to Champaign, IL. After leaving school, he began newspaper work in New York continuing until 1889. In 1889, he enlisted in the 17th Infantry and fought in the campaign against the Sioux Indians in South Dakota in 1890-91. He was discharged from service in 1892 and taught school until 1893, when he entered the University of Michigan. In fall, 1895 he moved to Menominee, MI settling in Stephenson in 1896, practicing law there for 10 years. In 1906 he moved his practice to Escanaba. He was circuit court commissioner from 1899-1901.
