Biographical Sketch:
Son of John and Lydia Smith. Youngest of 11, his father died when he was an infant. He did farm labor until he was 18. He then attended school and taught for 2 winters for the district school. he moved to Grass Lake, MI in 1840. He was partners in the mercantile, Hale & Smith in Grass Lake for many years. He was one of the founders, and secretary for the Farmers' Insurance Co. of Jackson County.
