Biographical Sketch:
Son of Richard R. & Elizabeth (Snell) Smith. Of German descent on his mother's side. Graduated from University of NY, 1854, in medicine. Practiced in Fairfield, NY until 1858 when he became the surgeon on a ship. 1863, bought a flour mill in Portland, MI; he also manufactured furniture. He was President of the village, and for years a director of the Detroit, Lansing & Northern railroad. Held several local government & business offices. He resided in Chicago in 1887
