Of French and Irish heritage. Son of Louis and Julia (Hailey or Haley) O'Dette. The O'Dett family moved to Michigan in 1854. He was a dispatch carrier for General Thomas' headquarters for about 2 years. He had a dairy at his farm. He served as school director for 11 years; school inspector for 2 years, township clerk for 7 years and other local offices. Member of the Grove Grange.
