Biographical Sketch:
Only son of John & Sallie (Hicks) Croswell. Of Scotts-Irish descent. Moved to Adrian, MI, 1837, with his uncle after his parents died. Studied law, 1846; deputy co. clerk & register of deeds a few yrs. 1855 formed law partnership. 1862 appted. Adrian's city attorney. Elected mayor of Adrian & then state senator, 1862.

Notable Facts:
Drafted the act ratifying the 13th amend. of the US Const. (abolishing slavery). Speaker of the MI House, 1873. 17th governor of Michigan, 1877-80.
