Biographical Sketch:
Son of Isaac and Sarah Bonine; of Quaker descent. Worked on his father's farm until 17 years of age, attended school in the winters. Studied medicine under Dr. J. Prichet in Centerville, IN for 3.5 years. Moved to Cassopolis, MI (MIBiog shows Niles) in 1844 and practiced medicine. He also lived in Vandalia for a time. Enlisted as a private at the out break of the Civil War but was soon appointed as Surgeon of the 2nd Regiment of Michigan Infantry and later as Surgeon-in-Chief for the 3rd Division of the 9th Army Corps. In 1864 he returned to Michigan and settled in Niles. Served as mayor of Niles and postmaster; vice president of the State Medical Society and surgeon of the Michigan Central Railroad Co.

Notable Facts:
Began as a Whig,; became a member of the Free-Soil Party then aided in the formation of the Republican Party. He was elected to the legislature but prefferred to accept the position of Examining Surgeon on the Provost Marshall's staff for the Western District of Michigan, headquartered in Kalamazoo until the end of the war. One of the earliest medical practitioners in Cassopolis.
