Biographical Sketch:
Born to poor farmers, Mr. Grant spent most of his childhood farming and attending school in the winter. At age 15 he left the farm to pursue his education, becoming a teacher then principal on the side. He removed to Michigan when he was accepted into the University of Michigan. He resigned his position as principal of the Ann Arbor high school to enlist for the Civil War. When the war broke out he organized a military company assigned to the 20th Michigan Infantry. He climbed the ranks until Lee surrendered. After the war he returned to University of Michigan to study Law. He was admitted to the bar in June 1866. He served as postmaster in Ann Arbor from 1867-70. Elected regent of the University of Michigan in 1871; served 8 years. Moved to Houghton, MI in 1873. He was elected prosecuting attorney. He became circuit judge in 1882 , reelected in 1887, and elected to Justice of the Supreme Court in 1889-1909.
