He taught school and began his law career in Ohio. His health caused him to relocate and in the fall of 1842, he moved to Eaton Co., MI with 850 sheep which he sold. He purchased land in Eaton Rapids. He was prominent in the founding of the Eaton County Pioneer Society in 1872.
