Biographical Sketch:
Of Dutch descent. Son of Rowland and Rachel (Drew) VanScoy. He was born 3 months after his father's death from fever following the War of 1812. At 13 he was hired out for 9 months to work on a farm. He taught school for 6 terms. He came to Michigan in 1839 and purchased a farm in DeWitt, Clinton Co. He sold this farm in 1854 and moved to Essex, MI; he owned other properties, including several lots in Maple Rapids. He was active in banking. He served as supervisor [of Essex and DeWitt twps], treasurer and justice of the peace and was the village president of Maple Rapids. He was a recruiter during the Civil War. member of the MAsons and the Grange
