He entered the US Army in 1942, served with the 27th Infantry Division in the Southwest Pacific for 35 months, combat in Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa; honorably discharged in 1945; employed by the M.A. Hanna Iron Co. [22 years]; elected to the City Commission in 1952 for a 4-year term; served as president of the Stambaugh Athletic Assn. [7 years]; member of UAW-CIO, grievance chairman [12 years]; and president of the M.A. Hanna Federal Credit Union; member of the Michigan United Conservation Club, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars; Michigan United Sportsmens Club; Northern Michigan Sportsmens Club; M. A. Hanna Federal Credit Union, first president.
